We have ended each day with doing activities related to our "All About Me" theme and having free choice time. Students love this time of the day. Today some students were able to try color mixing to make their skin tones for the collage self portraits we'll begin next week. The book, The Colors of Us, by Karen Katz, was our inspiration. The main character in the story paints the people in her neighborhood by mixing white, yellow, black, and red paints to create everyone's unique skin tone. We are also mixing our own paint colors--what fun! Right now, we are focusing on one of the essential questions of this unit: "How are we alike and different?" Thinking about external similarities and differences is how we've started, but we are also starting to ponder differences and likenesses that you can't see.
