J-E-L-L-O!

Students did two parts of a four-part culminating activity for our Solids and Liquids unit today. Each first grade teacher is hosting one activity that focuses on the changing states of matter--from solid to liquid or liquid to solid...and some that include mixtures and multiple changes. Jello and Oobleck were the activities of the day for our class and Miss Stevens' class. Your child participated in both activities, and the reviews were very positive!
The photos below are of the Jello project in our classroom. Our document camera and Smartboard once again came in handy to show the action up close for everyone to see! Most students in our class think of Jello as a solid once it's been cooled in the refrigerator for a few hours. Scientifically speaking, it doesn't neatly fit into either category and is considered a "colloid." Either way, it made for great discussion and showed how much students know about solids and liquids and how they can back up their thinking with evidence. So smart! (And eating it was a nice reward for all that thinking!)
