Penny Plate

Here's a quick and easy game to play at home to practice the complements of 10 (addition facts with the sum of 10). Knowing these facts in a snap helps children develop stronger computational skills. To play, you need 10 pennies or other small objects and a plate. One person hides some of the pennies under the plate while the other person looks away. When the "hider" is ready, the "guesser" looks at the plate and determines how many pennies must be hidden underneath. If the guesser gives the correct answer, he/she gets a tally on a tally chart. If not, the hider gets the point. You can play until someone has 5 tallies. Here's a look at some students playing this game in class...
