Odds and Ends

Here are some of the things happening in Room 6 lately...

Students have been working on and off for several weeks to add to their number scrolls. The goal is to reach 1000 by the end of first grade, and many students are doing well in working towards this goal! This is great for number writing practice, as well as recognizing and extending patterns in numbers.
Chef Sorenson visited the classroom on Monday to introduce how you can put two letters together to form blends! A dash of "g" and a sprinkle of "l" makes "gl" as in 'glad,' 'gleam,' and 'glimmer'! The "l blends" are our latest SWR skill.
Our new "wonderful words" vocabulary routine has seemed to be very popular with students. They are doing very well with learning the three words we add to our Vocabulary Wall each week, and I am encouraging everyone to try to use these words in speaking and writing. And, if they come across them while reading, the should know what they mean! We will continue this routine until the end of the school year. If you have a chance to use and discuss these words with your child, that will help commit the words to your child's memory. I will post a running list on the sidebar of this blog for your reference. These words will not be tested--it's just another way to help children expand their vocabularies. Each set of words is introduced using a children's picture book.
