Words sorts and comprehension work

Last week, most SWR groups did a word sort activity to practice important reading/spelling skills, such as differentiating between different short vowel sounds. Word sorts can take a while to complete, because of the number of words included. If your child ever brings home a partially complete word sort page, feel free to have him/her finish it at home. I always ask children to read the words as they cut them out and glue them on the page. I also have children read the words once they are sorted into the correct columns (short a, short i, short e, etc.).

Students took turns wearing the "Whiz of Is" crowns--a fun way to reinforce this important "Red Word." Students throughout the school saw these crowns and asked about them. We're spreading sight word knowledge around. :)
We've been working a lot on checking our comprehension of the books we read during read-aloud and Reading Workshop. Students have been working in partnerships to practice retelling, checking each other's words to make sure they don't miss important details or facts. On Thursday, students were given a large paper check mark with the words "Check for understanding" written on it. This is to show whose turn it is to listen and retell. One partner reads, and the other checks for understanding! Sometimes having a visual reminder is useful. This tool will be available during our partner reading time in Reading Workshop.
