What's happening in math?

I posted this yesterday, but the photos didn't show up. I hope it works this time!

A LOT is happening in math--this is a class FULL of mathematicians. It is one of the best parts of our day. Your children really seem to enjoy our math station time. I do too! Here's a glimpse into what we did yesterday...

Children are working on "masterpiece frames." These frames will be spray painted gold or silver and will be used to hold various works of art children create throughout the school year. Students arranged pasta shapes into a pattern around the border of the tag board. (Patterning is an important math concept!)

We have been working on learning about pennies and nickels. Today, students learned about exchanging pennies for nickels and counting the total amount of coins. We will continue working with money concepts throughout the year.

Students enjoyed playing "Bean Plate," my variation of the game "Penny Plate," which is part of our Everyday Math curriculum. Students had ten beans. One partner put some beans under the plate while the other person looked away. The partner then had to guess how many beans must be under the plate based on the number of beans on top of the plate. So, if there were 6 beans on top of this plate, how many must be under the plate to make 10 all together? Ask your child! :-) Students are getting VERY good at knowing the complements of 10 (ways to add up to ten). This would be a great game to play at home with beans, pennies, or other small objects and a plate, bowl, or cup. We've been practicing complements of 10, but any number would work!

5+___=10
