A peak into our day (10-8-10)

It was an excellent week! Here's a glimpse into what was happening on Friday morning. Just another fun day at school! :-)

At the word study station during our literacy station time, students read/sang the "Chicken Soup with Rice-October" song. They then unscrambled the words on mini-sentence strips and glued them in the correct order on a page for their Poetry-Song Notebooks. After reading/singing the song again to ensure it was glued in the correct order, they added an illustration to match the words. Here are the lyrics, in case your child would like to sing for you:
In October, I'll be host
to witches, goblins, and a ghost.
I'll serve them chicken soup on toast.
Whoopy once, whoopy twice.
Whoopy chicken soup with rice.
(Words taken from Maurice Sendak's book, Chicken Soup with Rice)

Math stations...

The Penny-Nickel Exchange is a game to help students practice making exchanges (pennies for nickels). It's also a great way to reinforce counting combinations of pennies and nickels.

Students have been working on a scarecrow glyph. Glyphs are a pictorial form of data collection.   For example, on this scarecrow, you can learn things about this student--the triangle nose indicates she has raked leaves (it would be square otherwise), the yellow shirt indicates she has a sibling (it would be purple otherwise), the blue pants show that she has carved a pumpkin before (it would be red if not), and so on. These scarecrows, along with the key for the glyph will be displayed in the hallway as they are completed. Fall math fun!

Relaxing with books...

The students above are enjoying the part of our day we call Read to Self time. It is a lovely time of day, and it is also a critical component of our Reading Workshop. Students have been reading successfully for at least 15 minutes stretches on a consistent basis. Yippee!!!! During this time, I meet with individuals for reading conferences and will soon begin doing small group work, so it's important students can be productive readers during this time.
