Hooray--Our first Skype "visit" is arranged!

I have been working diligently behind the scenes to establish connections beyond the four walls of our classroom. Part of this will take place in the form of Skype visits with guest speakers and students from other classrooms around the country, and (I hope), around the world. I'm pleased to announce that our first Skype connection will happen on Thursday! Since we are learning about community helpers and fire safety/firefighters is our next topic, I thought it'd be perfect to meet a firefighter and her fire dogs to learn more about fire safety. Here's an overview of what students will learn in this session (from the firesafetydogs.com website) and a short video introduction:

Introduction of a Fire Safety Dog
Selected reading
Sharing of fire safety tips
Singing of fire safety song
Jr. Firefighter Oath
Q & A

Students will learn 4 valuable fire safety messages that will help keep them & their family fire safe including:
Recognizing the firefighter as a helper & a friend
Knowing the sound & purpose of a smoke alarm
Understanding the importance of practicing a home fire drill using an escape map
Knowing when & how to crawl low

I am looking forward to this new experience!
